I learned many things here, mainly that I didn't know how to model.
(I still don't, but now I have more experience, I suppose...)
I started this project in March 2020 (!), thought I'd finish it in a week or so. Then the "thing" happened. Then I fumbled around for too long, struggling, trying to re-invent the wheel, before going off to learn how to manage topology better (with William Vaughan's Topology Workbook). That book is invaluable for anyone who wants to make all-quad 3d models.
I took about 3-6 months to practice topology, did a few simpler models, and then came back, and everything went so much faster. Hopefully my next model will take less time...
Things learned:
1. Sometimes it's better to just delete a part that isn't working, and rebuild in a different way.
2. Sometimes you just need more polygons. I tried to be efficient but some curves just need a lot more density.
3. Sometimes one just has to "not be perfect", and make more progress with a "Just build it and refine later" strategy.
4. Don't leave snacks at your desk, you'll eat them without noticing. Maybe some chewing gum is better.
5. It's fine to work a little bit on one part of the mesh, then move to another part when you get bored.
6. 2d concepts are tricky, because sometimes things don't line up in "real" 3d... It's a challenge.
7. Quads are supposed to be about the same size if possible. I learned this about halfway through... Too late to go back and rebuild some parts.
8. All-Quad topology looks nice. It takes a little longer but maybe with practice it will be faster.
9. It would be nice to have an Art Director. Looking at your own artwork for a long time can alter your perception of how it's going.
